On August 26, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) received a letter from an unknown sender claiming to be from Jubilee Party, stating that the party would field a candidate in the Kibra by-election.
However, the IEBC declined to act on the letter after Jubilee Party dismissed it as fake and instead dispatched it to the party 'for information and further action.'
IEBC later tweeted that they had received the letter, but that Jubilee Party had denied authoring it and termed it as fake.
Journalist Dennis Itumbi, who has been defending the letter as genuine on social media, is likely to get into trouble yet again.
Itumbi is already in court in connection with a letter purporting there was a plot by Cabinet Secretaries from Mt Kenya region and others to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto.
He denied the charges and was released on a Ksh 100,000 cash bail and is barred from posting about the case on his social media platforms.
The Kibra by-election was triggered by the death of ODM MP Ken Okoth.
