On Monday, a dramatic scene unfolded at Gatamaiyu village in Naivasha when two members of a Hebrew-speaking sect refused to participate in the ongoing census exercise.

According to Gatamaiyu assistant chief Robert Macharia, the couple insisted that being counted was against their faith, and their efforts to convince them otherwise were unsuccessful.

The couple, dressed in flowing white robes, continued speaking in gibberish as the mesmerized census officials engaged them in a heated discussion.

Police accompanying the officials made a chase and arrested the couple, who were later escorted to the Naivasha police station and locked up.

However, efforts to serve them meals while behind bars also turned futile, as they refused to partake in the served food, claiming they could only eat a meal prepared by one of them.

The two face a Sh500,000 fine or one year in jail, or both, for refusing to take part in the exercise.
