On August 27, 2019, Prophet Owuor's Kasarani church was embroiled in a sex scandal involving Bishop Joseph Gitonga, a personal assistant to the prophet.
The controversy began when Owuor and other bishops stormed the church and installed Eric Simiyu as the new bishop, replacing Gitonga.
Following the installation, some worshipers were coerced into confessing, including women who accused Gitonga of allegedly 'anointing' their naked bodies and having sex with them.
Gitonga had been at odds with some bishops over allegations that he had swindled millions meant for constructing Owuor's Runda home.
