As the nation grapples with numerous public safety and security issues, it is imperative that we address these concerns to prevent a chaotic society.

Public safety and security encompass a wide range of issues, from government protection of citizens from internal and external threats to the voluntary conduct of citizens and preventive measures to ensure their protection.

Recently, a shocking incident in Nakuru saw Kenyans siphoning petroleum from an oil tanker accident scene, highlighting the need for public education on safety.

Despite the high number of fatal injuries, people continue to engage in such behaviour, indicating a need for training on safe conduct.

Another concerning issue is the prevalence of jaywalking in Nairobi, with many pedestrians believing motorists are solely responsible for obeying traffic rules.

However, this is a misconception, and pedestrians must understand and obey traffic rules to ensure their safety.

The spread of misinformation on social media is also a public safety and security hazard, as it can lead to panic and irrational behaviour.

Only authorized sources should disseminate public health information, such as disease outbreaks or traffic accidents.

Furthermore, the sharing of data, particularly sensitive information like national identity cards, poses a significant risk to public safety and security.

The government should outlaw the practice of collecting and storing such information, and institutions like Kenya Power and Nairobi Water must protect customer data from hackers and staff slips.

Addressing these issues requires a heightened level of public consciousness and preventive measures, including education, enforcement, and responsible social media use.
