On August 27, 2019, the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) took drastic measures to protect Nairobi's environment by shutting down Daima Dairy, a major dairy farm, over claims of discharging untreated effluents into the Nairobi sewer.
According to Nema's Acting Director General, Mamo B Mamo, the firm's manager was arrested, and the facility will remain closed until further notice.
Speaking on the matter, Mamo emphasized the importance of adhering to water quality regulations, stating that untreated effluents from dairy farms can lead to pollution of water bodies.
As part of Nema's ongoing efforts to clean up Nairobi's rivers, the agency has identified 122 discharge points along the river basin and is enforcing compliance with environmental regulations.
These measures are part of a broader effort to address the pollution of Nairobi River, which has been filled with raw untreated sewage due to human activities along the river line, as revealed by an expose carried out by the Daily Nation.
