On August 27, 2019, the Somali government accused the Kenyan military of targeting the country's telecoms infrastructure in the fight against al-Shabab militants.
According to Telecommunication Minister Abdi Anshur Hassan, an enemy had openly attacked the Somali economy by destroying mobile phone masts in the south of the country.
The attacks, which have occurred 12 times in the Gedo region, have disconnected up to 4,000 people, said Hormuud, a Somali telecoms firm.
The Somali government is calling on the African Union to intervene and investigate the attacks, which it believes are aimed at preventing al-Shabab from communicating.
