On August 27, 2019, a devastating road crash occurred in Nyandarua County, claiming the lives of four people and leaving a fifth in critical condition.
The accident involved a car and a lorry, which collided head-on after the car's driver lost control while attempting to avoid a pothole near Captain Market.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was trying to avoid hitting a pothole when he swerved into the path of the oncoming lorry, resulting in the fatal collision.
Residents of the area were outraged by the incident and blocked the busy highway, demanding immediate repairs to the road, which has numerous potholes.
They also called for the area to be declared a blackspot, citing several previous crashes in the region.
At the JM Memorial Level Four Hospital, the hospital's administrator, Ms Mary Njuguna, confirmed that the fifth victim was in critical condition and was awaiting referral to Nakuru General Hospital for specialized treatment.
However, the identities of the victims could not be established as their documents were stolen by would-be good Samaritans at the scene.
"We are unable to get their names or where they come from. They do not have any identification documents with them," said Ms Njuguna.
Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia sent his condolences to the families of the victims and appealed to the Ministry of Roads to repair the road between Nyahururu and Gilgil town, which he described as being in a worsening state.
"I am saddened by the four deaths. We have lost four young lives in the fatal road accident. We have lost them at a very critical moment and we believe they travelled home for the census," said Governor Kimemia.
