On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a stern warning to corrupt government officials and state officers in Mombasa, where he flagged 200,000 barrels of crude oil for exportation. The President's warning came as investigations into graft at the Mombasa Port continue.
According to the President, senior managers at the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in Mombasa have been monitored, and enough evidence points to massive looting and shoddy dealings at the port. He warned that those involved in the corruption will soon face the consequences.
“Do not say I have sent anyone when you get caught. You have been caught with the hand in the jar and very soon you will begin to see that so and so is missing, he has been arrested. There is danger coming and so open your eyes and there will be no one to talk to or call because those lines are no longer in service,” President Uhuru said.
He added, “You will just read in the newspapers that someone has been picked up (by detectives). It is upon everyone to think over their actions. The culture of calling for help is no more, it will be upon you to defend yourself.”
President Uhuru also stated, “Ni noma, hizo simu zilizimwa (Things are thick. Those phones were switched off.)
The President's warning follows an investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) into the corruption at the port. Top KPA officials, including Managing Director Daniel Manduku and his predecessor Catherine Muturi, have already been grilled over the contract.
