On August 26, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta flagged off Kenya's first crude oil shipment at the port of Mombasa, a significant milestone in the country's energy sector.
However, the event also served as a warning to corrupt public officials, who are now on high alert as the government intensifies its anti-graft efforts.
Speaking at the event, President Kenyatta made it clear that the days of corrupt officials receiving special treatment are over.
"These guys (detectives) have decided it's do or die. When they catch up with you, just know I don't give instructions to them. It is you who has been caught on the wrong. We will only read it in the newspapers that you have been nabbed. So wherever you are, keep your eyes open and be very careful with what you do," he said.
He added that the culture of calling for help is no more, and corrupt officials will have to defend themselves.
"The culture of calling for help is no more, it will be upon you to defend yourself. Ni noma, hizo simu zilizimwa (Things are thick. Those phones were switched off.)," President Kenyatta warned.
