On August 26, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta flagged off Kenya's first crude oil shipment at the port of Mombasa, a significant milestone in the country's energy sector.
However, the event also served as a warning to corrupt public officials, with Kenyatta hinting at a renewed crackdown on graft.
"These guys (detectives) have decided it's do or die. When they catch up with you, just know I don't give instructions to them. It is you who has been caught on the wrong. We will only read it in the newspapers that you have been nabbed," Kenyatta said.
He emphasized that the culture of calling for help is no more, and that corrupt officials will have to defend themselves.
"Ni noma, hizo simu zilizimwa (Things are thick. Those phones were switched off)," Kenyatta warned, signaling that the authorities are on high alert and ready to take action against corrupt officials.
