August 26, 2019 - The Somali government has accused the Kenyan military of destroying mobile phone masts in the south of the country, where Kenyan troops are deployed in the fight against the Islamist militant group, al-Shabab.
The alleged attacks, which have resulted in 12 incidents in the Gedo region, have disconnected up to 4,000 people, according to a statement by Somali telecoms firm Hormuud.
The Somali government is seeking the intervention of the African Union to investigate the attacks, which it believes are aimed at preventing al-Shabab from communicating.
Kenyan authorities have not commented on the allegations, which come as a surprise given the Somali government and Kenyan troops are on the same side in the fight against the jihadists.
Telecommunication Minister Abdi Anshur Hassan described the attacks as an 'enemy' openly attacking the Somali economy.
