On Sunday evening, a couple in Kisumu's Obunga slums was taken into custody by police for allegedly assaulting a chief and a village elder who were conducting a census at their residence.
The incident occurred just a day after the couple had chased away census enumerators, resulting in them being left out of the census count.
According to acting Kanyakwar Chief Maurice Ojwang, the couple's actions on Saturday prompted the chief to accompany the enumerators on Sunday, along with police officers, to ensure a smooth census process.
However, the situation took a turn for the worse when the woman, who was not at home when the census officials arrived, began wailing and causing a commotion upon seeing them.
Her husband, who was not present at the time, soon arrived and joined in the shouting, leading to a confrontation with the police. In the ensuing chaos, the husband severely bit the village elder's fingers.
The area assistant chief was also injured when the woman hit him with a piece of brick.
