On Saturday, August 24, 2019, the 2019 National Census was launched in various counties across Kenya.
Kenyan governors took the lead in the exercise, with Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega County assembling his family at his home in Emabole village in Butere.
James Ongwae, the governor of Kisii County, was counted in his Maili Mbili home, while Kahiga Mutahi of Nyeri County launched the exercise at his residence in Ring Road Estate, Nyeri Town.
Other governors who participated in the exercise included Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga County, who launched it at her Kagio residence.
Preparations for the census were underway, with most entertainment joints closed and police officers patrolling in areas like Homa Bay town to ensure compliance.
County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo of Mombasa announced plans to deploy more police officers in crime-prone areas, with at least 4,293 enumerators enlisted to conduct the exercise.
