PSG Completes Domestic Treble as League Cup Ends After 29 Seasons

Paris St Germain claimed a domestic treble by defeating Olympique Lyonnais 6-5 in a penalty shootout to win the French League Cup on August 1, 2020. The victory came in the competition's final edition, which had been suspended since its inception in 1995, with the French Professional Football League (LFP) deciding to scrap it for the 2024 season.

The match, played at Stade de France with 5,000 spectators under coronavirus protocols, ended 0-0 after extra time. Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes made multiple critical saves, including denying Neymar and Angel Di Maria, while PSG's Keylor Navas stopped a Maxwel Cornet free kick. Lyon's Rafael da Silva was sent off in extra time for a professional foul on Di Maria.

Pablo Sarabia's decisive penalty in the shootout secured PSG's ninth League Cup title. The LFP had failed to secure broadcasting rights for 2020-2024, leaving the competition's future uncertain despite its 29-year history. The win also granted Stade Reims a Europa League qualifying spot after their sixth-place finish in Ligue 1.

PSG's treble was completed after their French Cup victory, with the club aiming for a potential quadruple in the Champions League quarter-finals against Atalanta on August 12.
