On Sunday, Nelly Kinja, a landlady in Joyland Estate, Juja, Kiambu County, was arrested for lying to 2019 Population and Housing Census enumerators that she had already been enumerated.
According to reports, Ms. Kinja denied the enumerators entry into her premises, claiming that the census served no purpose and hurled vulgarities at them.
She also claimed that the government had oppressed her with land rates and attempted to deceive the police by saying she had been enumerated on Saturday.
Ms. Kinja will be arraigned at the Thika Law Courts on Monday, facing a possible year in jail, a fine of Sh500,000, or both for the attack on census officials.
Meanwhile, in Kisumu, a man and his wife were arrested for assaulting census officials. Richard Ochieng' and his wife were visited by local leaders after they chased enumerators away from their home in Obunga slums on Saturday night.
Acting Kanyakwar Chief Maurice Ojwang explained that the family has always been problematic to authorities, even during polio vaccine drives where they refused to give their children the vaccine.
