Published on August 26, 2019, Sudanese authorities have activated a state of emergency in the Red Sea state following deadly tribal clashes that have left at least 16 people dead.

Clashes between the Bani Amer and Nuba tribes in Port Sudan, the capital of the Red Sea state, have been ongoing since Wednesday.

The transitional ruling body in Sudan has taken swift action, relieving the governor of the Red Sea and the head of its security apparatus of their duties.

A probe into the violence has been ordered, with authorities detecting the use of firearms for the first time in the fighting.

The country's civilian-majority body, which is overseeing a three-year transitional period, has vowed to pave the way for elections.
