Published on August 26, 2019
Airtel customers in Kenya are now enjoying a new set of SIM lines with the prefixes 0100, 0101, and 0102.
The Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) launched the new prefixes in April 2019, in a move aimed at addressing the increasing demand for mobile internet services.
According to Francis Wangusi, the then CAK director general, the rollout was necessitated by the growing number of customers, the need for better access to mobile internet services, and technological advancements.
As part of the rollout, Airtel was issued with three million new numbers, while Safaricom received two million new numbers.
The new prefixes are expected to enable the registration of over 100 million sim cards, thereby addressing the increasing demand for sim cards.
Airtel, which boasts of close to 13.3 million subscribers, has also stated that the new numbers will be 4G enabled, making internet accessibility quite fast.
