As the African Games get underway in Rabat, Morocco, Kenya is making a strong showing with a talented team of athletes.
The championships, which kicked off today, will provide a crucial testing ground for athletes who will compete in the IAAF World Championships in Doha next month.
Coming on the heels of last week's National Athletics Championships in Nairobi, the African Games offer a vital stepping stone for athletes to graduate from the national to the continental level.
These assignments will further boost Kenya's preparations for next year's Tokyo Olympic Games.
So far, Team Kenya has won medals in beach volleyball, taekwondo, and mountain bike competitions, with the women's volleyball team securing a significant victory over Africa champions Cameroon.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has shown goodwill by meeting with various teams to wish them well in their forthcoming assignments.
The early medals in beach volleyball, taekwondo, and mountain bike events are a welcome development, as they demonstrate the country's potential to excel beyond track and field events.
These medallists have shown promise and require additional funding and exposure to help them fight for the podium in Tokyo.
With the National Sports Fund now operational, we hope that the perennial cash crunch affecting our sportsmen and women will be a thing of the past.
Our best wishes go out to Team Kenya, and congratulations on the early medals.
