On August 25, 2019, the Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) announced plans to license a new firm, Originlike Green Biotech EPZ, to process macadamia nuts for export.

AFA's interim Director General, Antony Mureithi, invited public opinions and asked those opposed to the licensing to state their reasons in a Kenya Gazette notice.

The new entrant will join a list of 30 companies processing the product grown in 12 counties, with the aim of ensuring all players respect regulations imposed by the government to promote quality.

According to Mureithi, the law demands that all players in the sector be vetted and licensed, with defaulters penalized.

“The law requires all the players in the sector to abide by the law to ensure export market is not compromised,” Mureithi said.
