On August 24, 2019, a census enumerator in Maseno, Kenya, was brutally attacked by a group of individuals while on duty.
According to reports, the attackers were hiding outside the enumerator's gate and pounced on her as she disembarked from a vehicle driven by her supervisor.
The supervisor had dropped the enumerator off at her gate before the incident occurred.
Police in Kisumu County have launched a manhunt for the attackers, who made off with the enumerator's power bank and torch but left her census materials untouched.
Two suspects have been arrested and are cooperating with police in the investigation.
The National Housing and Population Census was underway in the region at the time of the incident.
The enumerator is currently receiving medical attention and is in stable condition.
Confirming the incident, Nyanza Regional Commander Vincent Makokha stated that the County Statistics Department had been ordered to suspend the supervisor due to negligence.
The supervisor and police who were deployed in Maseno to beef up security during the census have since been summoned to record statements with police.
