On the first day of the national population census, residents of Embu's Bamako area in Dallas estate fell prey to thieves who stole household items from their compounds. The residents had left their gates open to facilitate the enumerators' access to their houses, but unfortunately, the enumerators did not turn up that night.
Residents woke up on Sunday morning to find their clothes, shoes, and basins swept away. Purity Nduku, a resident, said she had left her clothes outside to dry and regretted having left the gate open. She vowed that they would keep it locked at night and urged the government to deploy more police officers to beef up security during the census.
Embu County Commissioner Abdullahi Galgalo assured residents of their security and urged them to ensure they are counted. Meanwhile, popular entertainment joints in many parts of Embu remained shut on Saturday night to facilitate the census. Embu Governor Martin Wambora, who was among the first citizen to be enumerated, said those who will open their bars at night will have their licences revoked.
