Kenyan citizens have been informed that they do not need to travel back to their homes to be enumerated during the ongoing census, which is set to conclude on August 31, 2019.
Government spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna made the announcement during a press conference on Sunday, August 25, 2019, where he also warned politicians against politicizing the census.
"It is not a political exercise; this is a statistical exercise that is aimed at helping the government to provide better services to our people," Col. Oguna said.
He urged those who will not have been counted by the end of day two of the exercise not to panic, reiterating that the exercise will proceed until August 31, 2019.
Col. Oguna also reassured Kenyans that data collected during the census will be stored by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) confidentially and will not be revealed to anyone except for the purpose of aiding the government in proper planning.
Over 100,000 police officers have been deployed across the country to provide security during the exercise, with Col. Oguna stating that "there have been instances of insecurity but nothing major".
