On August 25, 2019, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader, Right Hon. Raila Odinga, announced that the party would not directly nominate a candidate for the November 7 mini poll in Kibra constituency.

Speaking at a rally at Kamkunji Grounds in Kibra constituency, Raila stated that the party would conduct primaries on August 31 to determine its candidate for the by-election.

The rally was held to unveil aspirants vying for the Kibra Constituency seat, which was previously occupied by the late Ken Okoth.

Among the candidates introduced as vying for the ODM party's ticket in the coming by-election were Imran Okoth, brother to the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth, and former Senator Elizabeth Ongoro.

According to ODM, the occasion was special as it provided a rare opportunity for aspirants to jointly sell their policies as they prepare for primaries.

The ODM Kibra nomination process, as per the party leader, will be as follows:

  • August 26: ODM Kibra branch submits the names of candidates.
  • August 27: ODM Secretariat vets all applicants at the party headquarters.
  • August 31: ODM subjects all party candidates to a popular process of universal suffrage.
