Kenya's national census kicked off on Saturday night, with Information, Communications and Technology Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru assuring citizens that their personal data would be safely protected.
Speaking at his rural home in Chaka, Nyeri County, Mucheru emphasized that the data collected would be confidential and not accessible to third parties.
“The citizens’ data and information captured will be protected and there are laws that deal with confidentiality,” Mucheru said.
Earlier, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga urged Kenyans to provide accurate information to enable the government plan effectively for its people.
During the exercise, Nyeri County Commissioner Yatich Kipkemei deployed 1,600 security officers to ensure the census proceeded smoothly and assured residents of their safety.
However, the exercise was disrupted by heavy rains in some parts of the county, including Chaka, Nyeri town, and its environs.
On a positive note, Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri commended the enumerators for their cooperative and friendly approach during the exercise.
The census will continue until August 31.
