On August 25, 2019, Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), addressed supporters in Kibra, Kenya, ahead of the upcoming by-election.
During his speech, Raila Odinga assured the public that the ODM by-election would be free and fair, and that the party would not favor any candidate.
He emphasized that the party would not issue direct tickets to any individual, and that all candidates would have to go through the nomination process.
ODM's leader also stated that the by-election would take place on August 31, 2019, to select the party's candidate for the Kibra seat.
The Kibra seat became vacant following the death of Ken Okoth, the former member of parliament, due to cancer.
Some of the candidates vying for the ODM ticket include Imran Okoth, Ken's nephew, Edwin Sifuna, the ODM secretary general, Irshad Sumra, a local politician, Elizabeth Ondoro, and Eliud Owalo.
Other candidates include musician Chris Odhiambo, also known as Chriss Darlin, and Benson Musungu, the ODM youth leader.
The ODM party has faced criticism for losing three seats in the Embakasi South, Wajir West, and Ugenya constituencies in previous by-elections.
ODM supporters are demanding transparency and fairness in the nomination process to avoid losing the Kibra seat.
