The Githurai Mwiki Police Station resumed operations after undergoing restructuring tied to a 2018 initiative to reorganize Kenya's police force. The station, located in Kiambu County and Nairobi, received a new commander and additional resources during a ceremony led by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Edward Mbugua.
Mbugua outlined plans to expand personnel, stating, "I have instructed the county commander (Kianbu) to add 20 more officers. Currently, we have only 20, and by next week, we will have more." The event featured Ruiru MP Simon King’ara, who highlighted the station's role in regional security.
Funding for the upgrades came from the Ruiru Neighborhood Community Development Fund (NG-CDF). King’ara noted, "We have been advocating for this station in Ruiru City and Kimbo, and its construction and renovation were funded by NG-CDF." He also announced plans for official patrol vehicles to support operations.
King’ara called for new police stations in Mwihoko and Gatongora, both within Ruiru constituency, to strengthen security. The ceremony included senior police officers from Kiambu and Nairobi counties, as well as Mwiki Githurai Ward Administrator James Kimani Mburu (Kidim).
The station's reopening aligns with Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai's 2022 election-related initiative to establish police stations nationwide. Mbugua emphasized the station's role in enforcing laws and implementing measures to curb COVID-19 outbreaks, citing Githurai's high infection rates linked to coronavirus variants.
"I appreciate your excellent service," Mbugua told station officers during the ceremony.
