Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, 21, was targeted with racist abuse on social media after missing a penalty in a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday, August 24, 2019.
England forward Rashford was not the only player to face abuse, as teammate Paul Pogba was also targeted after a spot-kick miss on Monday.
Anti-discrimination body Kick It Out called the abuse 'vile' and urged 'decisive action' to be taken, stating that the problem will not go away without it.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed his frustration, saying that people who post racist abuse 'hide behind fake identities' and that it's 'unheard of' that this problem persists in 2019.
Twitter has announced that it will meet with stakeholders to discuss its efforts to tackle abuse, following the targeting of Pogba.
Several footballers, including Rashford and Pogba, have spoken out against the abuse, with England women's manager Phil Neville calling for footballers to 'boycott' social media.
