Published on August 25, 2019, Sabina Wairimu, the first wife of late benga singer John De'Mathew, stunned mourners at his burial ceremony in Gatanga, Murang'a County, by vowing to protect her co-wife Caroline Waithira.
Ms. Wairimu's words of unity and support for her co-wife came as a surprise to many, as some had attempted to drive a wedge between them following De'Mathew's death in a road crash near Blue Post Hotel in Thika on Sunday.
However, Ms. Wairimu resisted these attempts, saying that she and Ms. Waithira had never quarreled when their husband was alive, and that nothing would come between them now.
She added that Ms. Waithira respected her as the first wife, and that she would continue supporting her and their children.
"No one will come between us. I recognize Ms. Waithira as the second wife and she respects me. In fact, when the late could not get his favorite shirt, I could call her to ask whether it was in her home. Our children love each other and it is hard to know which one belongs to which mother," she said.
Ms. Wairimu also vowed to take up her late husband's roles and continue supporting Ms. Waithira and all her children.
Ms. Waithira, in her own words, described De'Mathew as a symbol of unity in their family, saying that he was a partner, friend, and loving man.
