Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri formally established The Service Party of Kenya (TSP) on June 24, 2020, positioning it as a grassroots movement centered on public service.
The party's launch event at Nairobi's 14 Riverside Drive headquarters included a press conference where Kiunjuri outlined his vision following his 2016 dismissal from the cabinet. He emphasized TSP's commitment to addressing national challenges through its core principles.
The party's branding features yellow and red hues with a heart emblem symbolizing its pledge to serve citizens. Its slogan, 'Huduma, Twajiamini,' reflects a focus on selfless leadership and community welfare, according to Kiunjuri's remarks.
"True leaders prioritize service over personal gain," Kiunjuri stated. "Our heart symbol represents a promise to the people, grounded in the belief that service to humanity aligns with divine purpose." The party's platform includes tackling food insecurity, unemployment, and healthcare access, with plans for nationwide engagement once pandemic restrictions ease.
Kiunjuri noted political realignments ahead of the 2022 General Election, signaling TSP's openness to absorbing defectors from major parties. He criticized past political strategies, citing his 2013 formation of the Grand National Union (GNU) which later merged into the Jubilee Party in 2016.
The former CS alleged that President Uhuru Kenyatta encouraged him to dissolve GNU and abandon his Laikipia gubernatorial bid before abandoning him, though no evidence was provided. TSP's registration was facilitated by grassroots mobilization across Kenya's counties, according to the party's statement.
