On Saturday, the African States Tournament singles concluded at Karen Country Club in Nairobi, with Kenyan bowler Benson Kariuki emerging victorious. He defeated Zambian Mathew Mercer 21-2 in just 12 ends, securing the gold medal.
Benson's success was largely due to his continuous training and practice, which he credited as the key to his victory. In the morning session, he won 21-4 against Botswana's Regent Reid, setting him on the path to gold.
Kenya's team overall finished second with 29 points, while South Africa retained the gold medal they won in 2017 with 36 points. Zimbabwe took home the bronze with 28 points.
Kenya's men's team also excelled in other disciplines, winning the silver medal in pairs and bronze in triples. The ladies' team won a silver medal in triples and bronze in pairs.
Team manager Bernard Ndungu praised his players for their good game, particularly Benson, who earned a gold medal for the country.
The tournament will be hosted by Namibia in 2021.
