Published on August 24, 2019, US President Donald Trump is set to engage in a series of high-stakes meetings with world leaders at the G7 summit.
On Sunday morning, Trump will meet with Boris Johnson, the new British prime minister, who has been at odds with European leaders over Brexit. Trump has publicly expressed support for Brexit, further straining his relationships with world leaders.
Later on Sunday, Trump will meet with Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, amid reports of a potential deal on tariffs. The two leaders could formally sign a deal next month, a development that would likely please Trump.
However, Trump's discussion with Justin Trudeau on Sunday is expected to be frosty, despite resisting the temptation to criticize the Canadian prime minister at their working dinner on Saturday.
Trump has shown less restraint when it comes to Angela Merkel, the departing German chancellor, whom he will meet with on Monday. In a tweet on Wednesday, Trump lamented that Germany was paying 'zero interest' on debt while the US is 'paying interest.'
Before returning to the US on Monday afternoon, Trump will meet with Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. He will also have a face-to-face with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
