On August 24, 2019, a night raid in the Gueskerou district of Niger left 12 villagers dead, according to a local official.
The attack occurred on the frontier with Nigeria, in the Diffa region near Lake Chad, which has been plagued by militant groups and traffickers.
"Twelve villagers were killed on Friday at around 8:00pm (1900 GMT) by Boko Haram elements," a local elected official told AFP.
The Gueskerou area has been exposed to years of killings and kidnappings at the hands of the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.
Regional military efforts have been underway to combat the group, but the conflict has resulted in at least 27,000 deaths in Nigeria alone.
