Published on August 24, 2019
A Nyamira County census official has been fired after using census equipment to buy beer. The official, who has not been named, was a skilled ICT expert but lacked the funds to pay for his drinks.
According to The Standard, the official decided to use the census equipment as a pawn to secure a loan to buy beer. The equipment, which included a palm top and power bank, was meant to be used during the census.
The Nyamira County Commissioner, Amos Mariba, confirmed the incident and stated that the official had not disclosed the amount of beer he had consumed before being caught.
The official was arrested after failing to attend a census preparation meeting on August 21, 2019.
Mariba explained that the official was given a palm top and power bank, which he was supposed to use during the census, but he instead took them and used them as collateral to buy beer.
It is reported that the official was later taken to a police station where the equipment was found to be damaged.
Another census official from Kakamega County was also arrested on August 23, 2019, after he was found to have damaged census equipment and used it to buy beer.
The official, identified as Celsso Agimga, was arrested at a police station in Turbo, where the damaged equipment was found to be stored in the armory.
