On August 24, 2019, a family in Juja Farm, Kiambu County, was left reeling after a shocking betrayal.
John Kanyua, a businessman, had been married to Leah Wambui for 26 years and had five children with her. However, their union was shattered when Leah ran away with the local pastor who had presided over their wedding.
According to Kanyua, the pastor's admiration for his wife was clear from the beginning, but he failed to recognize the signs. The pastor, who is also the bishop of Joy Springs Church, had even appointed Leah as an assistant pastor at the church.
Leah's husband, who has been married to the pastor's wife, Agnes Wangivi, for 34 years, was also shocked by the development. Wangivi claimed that she had objected to Leah's appointment as an assistant pastor but was overruled by her husband.
The pastor's wife further alleged that her husband had developed cold feet on their family and had run away to Leah in 2015. She also claimed that Kanyua had been blindfolded to the pastor's intentions and had failed to keep his wife away from him.
Leah's parents have since contacted Kanyua to accept repayment of the dowry he paid to them, paving the way for a new wedding. However, Kanyua has refused to accept the offer, saying that he will not sit back and watch someone take his family.
Despite the predicaments, Kanyua still pays school fees for his children and sends foodstuffs to them from his kiosk. He has also vowed to take legal action if the government does not intervene.
