President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi died on June 8 at age 55, with official reports citing a heart attack but conflicting accounts suggesting complications from COVID-19. His wife, Denise, had recently traveled to Nairobi for treatment, raising questions about the circumstances of his passing.

Nkurunziza, a former rebel leader, governed Burundi through a mix of authoritarian tactics and populist gestures. His 2015 decision to extend his presidency through a controversial referendum triggered a failed coup and widespread violence that displaced 500,000 citizens. The conflict followed a civil war between 1993 and 2005 that claimed up to 300,000 lives.

The 2018 constitutional amendments allowed Nkurunziza to seek re-election despite serving three terms, a move that further polarized the nation. His administration faced international criticism for human rights abuses and economic decline, yet he maintained strong support among rural populations through agricultural outreach and religious symbolism.

Known for his eccentricities, Nkurunziza famously banned women from playing traditional drums in 2017 and hosted all-night prayer sessions at the presidential residence. His wife, Denise, became the first African First Lady to be ordained as a minister while in office.

Nkurunziza's 2007 decision to deploy Burundi troops to Somalia's African Union Mission generated significant revenue for the military, while his 2020 remarks about stepping down were met with skepticism. Despite his controversial rule, he was awarded the title of "Eternal Supreme Guide" by Burundi's ruling class. His death at 55 leaves a political vacuum in a nation still grappling with the aftermath of years of instability.
