Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza died of a heart attack on June 8, 2020, at Karusi hospital, the government confirmed June 9. A statement from official channels described his passing as a profound loss for the nation and international community.

The 55-year-old leader had been hospitalized after falling ill, though details about his condition remained limited. His death occurred days before the scheduled transition of power to newly elected leader Evariste Ndayishimiye, a retired general from the ruling CNDD-FDD party.

Nkurunziza's love for football was well-documented. He founded a soccer academy in 2004 that trained over 200 children and led his own team, Halleluya FC. Reports noted he attended a volleyball game just days before his death. A 2018 photo showed him speaking to the media after casting his vote in a constitutional referendum.

Government officials announced a seven-day mourning period. Nkurunziza's wife, Denise, was recovering at an Nairobi hospital from COVID-19 at the time of his passing.

His political career began in the 1990s during Burundi's civil war. Nkurunziza faced international scrutiny over human rights concerns and a controversial 2015 constitutional referendum that sparked widespread protests. Born in Bujumbura in 1964, he lost two siblings during the 1993 civil war and three others while fighting in the CNDD-FDD.
