President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi died suddenly on Monday from a heart attack following a two-day illness, according to official statements. The 55-year-old leader, who had governed since 2005, leaves behind a nation grappling with political and economic turmoil after 15 years in power.

Flags across Burundi were lowered to half-mast following his death. First lady Denise Bucumi, recovering from COVID-19 in a Nairobi hospital, returned to Bujumbura late Tuesday. Regional leaders expressed mixed reactions, with some praising his leadership while critics highlighted unresolved human rights concerns from his tenure.

Nkurunziza, a former sports teacher and evangelical, rose to prominence during Burundi's 1993-2006 civil war, which claimed 300,000 lives. He was elected president in 2005 and re-elected in 2010, but his 2015 bid for a third term sparked violent protests and a failed coup that left at least 1,200 dead and 400,000 displaced.

His final years saw Burundi face international sanctions and economic decline, with the World Bank ranking it among the world's poorest nations. The country withdrew from the International Criminal Court in 2017 and expelled UN rights officials investigating abuses. Despite this, leaders like South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta praised his commitment to African development.

Uncertainty now surrounds Burundi's transition. National Assembly president Pascal Nyabenda is set to assume interim leadership ahead of Evariste Ndayishimiye's August inauguration. However, doubts persist about the ruling party's cohesion and the country's future direction.

Rumors about the cause of death circulated, with some questioning the official heart attack diagnosis. As Burundi navigates this pivotal moment, the legacy of a leader whose rule polarized the nation remains deeply contested.
