The Uncomfortable Truth About Weight and Empathy

This archive report was first published on 24 August 2019.

On a recent trip to town, my niece and I encountered a woman who was struggling to fit into our tiny elevator. As we squeezed in, the doors refused to shut, and the woman was forced to exit, visibly upset.

My niece, oblivious to the woman's distress, asked if the woman's weight was causing the elevator to malfunction. Her comment was met with an awkward silence, and I was left to deal with the aftermath.

As we continued on our way, I couldn't help but think about the importance of empathy and kindness. My niece's comment had been thoughtless and hurtful, and it was a valuable lesson for both of us.
