Deputy President William Ruto's political influence in Kenya's South Rift region is eroding as several high-ranking Jubilee Party allies lose parliamentary positions amid a leadership purge. The restructuring coincides with President Uhuru Kenyatta's efforts to reinforce party discipline, targeting lawmakers perceived as loyal to Ruto.

Key Figures Removed

Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, former Senate majority leader, and Nakuru MP Susan Kihika, who previously held the majority whip role, are among those displaced. Tharaka-Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, former deputy speaker, and Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali also lost leadership posts. Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe replaced Washiali as majority whip.

Shifts in Allegiance

Several lawmakers who once supported Ruto have publicly pledged loyalty to Kenyatta. Nominated MP David Sankok emphasized adherence to party discipline, stating, "Those who do not support the president and the Jubilee manifesto, yet they were elected on a Jubilee Party ticket, should go and seek fresh mandate from the people." Nominated Senator Victor Prengei, facing disciplinary action for missing a party meeting, also shifted allegiance.

Regional Dynamics

In Nakuru County, where Ruto historically held strong support, many MPs have retreated from public advocacy. Only a few, including Senator Kihika and MP Samuel Arama, openly back Ruto. Arama noted, "We are ready to accommodate anybody ready to support President Kenyatta. The Jubilee Party has a manifesto that the President wants to deliver." However, some leaders fear political repercussions ahead of the 2022 elections.

Historical Context

Ruto's 2022 bid faces challenges as regional allies like Narok Governor Samuel ole Tunai and Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui align with Kenyatta. Political analysts suggest waning support in the Rift Valley, Ruto's traditional stronghold, threatens his presidential prospects. The 2022 race has drawn competition from Kanu, which recently signed a post-election agreement with Jubilee, complicating Ruto's strategy.

Legacy and Challenges

Despite setbacks, Ruto retains grassroots backing. MP Joseph Kipkosgei Tonui asserted, "Rift Valley is fully behind Deputy President Ruto... we will vote him overwhelmingly in 2022." However, historical precedents, including 2013 and 2017 electoral dynamics, highlight the volatility of regional politics. Ruto's 2007 campaign experience with Raila Odinga underscores the risks of factional shifts in Kenya's political landscape.
