On April 2019, Charlie Johnson, a nurse from Arkansas, discovered a lump in her breast, according to PEOPLE. Despite doctors initially telling her it was benign, she insisted on having it removed, and two weeks later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Charlie and her husband decided to document their journey with a photoshoot, capturing their love and resilience in the face of cancer. The photoshoot, taken by Mandy Parks, featured Charlie posing beside her husband and family heirlooms in a quiet country field.
However, it was Mandy's suggestion to have Charlie shave her head that truly made the photoshoot stand out. As Mandy said, 'We started talking about doing this photoshoot and I said, 'Why don't you be the one who takes your hair, not cancer?'
Charlie's response was just as powerful: 'If one woman is struggling with the worries, anxiety, fear of losing her hair and sees this post and can get some hope or empowerment to think 'I can do this,' then that is exactly what we want.'
Since the photos were shared on social media, other cancer survivors have been opening up about their own journeys, finding inspiration in Charlie's story.
