On August 23, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a major overhaul of the Kenyan government, aimed at improving services to citizens.
As part of the changes, Uhuru added responsibilities to Interior Minister Fred Matiang'i, who now oversees the Immigration Ministry, previously a separate entity.
The President also merged the Immigration and Interior Ministries, with Matiang'i at the helm.
Additionally, Uhuru transferred the Department of Immigration and Citizen Services to the Interior Ministry, which is now responsible for both immigration and internal security.
Furthermore, the President instructed Matiang'i to oversee the Presidential Delivery Unit and the National Coordination of National Government Ministries.
Separately, Uhuru announced that the Water Harvesting and Management Department would be transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Water and Environment, led by Minister Simon Chelugui.
