On August 23, 2019, Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecommunications company, made a significant commitment to the environment by pledging to plant five million trees.
The ambitious project, set to be completed within five years, aims to increase the country's forest cover to 10% by 2022.
According to Safaricom's Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Steve Chege, the trees will be planted in various areas, with a focus on indigenous species in gazetted forests.
"We have committed to work on this project, but we will plant indigenous trees in some of the gazette forests in Kenya," Chege said.
As part of its sustainability efforts, Safaricom has also set a target to become a net-zero carbon-emitting company by 2050.
The company's commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in its recent Sustainable Business Report 2019, which highlighted a 9% growth in jobs sustained, both directly and indirectly, to 979,000, and an 11% increase in its contribution to the economy, which rose to Sh601 billion.
