Tusker Mattresses, the retail chain behind Tuskys Supermarkets, has expanded its Coast regional footprint with the opening of its 58th local branch in Malindi, a strategic move that cements local retailers' market leadership against multinational players.
On Friday, August 23, 2019, the company's Group CEO, Mr. Dan Githua, officially opened the doors to Tuskys Malindi, located at the Oasis Shopping Mall, in a bid to deepen its market presence in key towns and locations in Kenya.
Speaking at the event, Githua assured Tuskys customers in Malindi that the retailer would bridge the existing fair pricing barrier that had seen the town's residents and tourism operators pay higher prices for retail provisions.
"Our main proposition to the shoppers of Malindi will be fair pricing," Githua said. "We have realised that groceries here, including foodstuff, are about 10% more expensive than in Mombasa, and we are committing to bridge the gap by offering similar prices to those enjoyed by our Mombasa or Nairobi customers."
He added that the opening of Tuskys Malindi would also enhance the variety of products available in the town, allowing residents to purchase quality electronics and furniture items without having to travel to Nairobi or Mombasa.
Tusker Mattresses has invested more than Kshs 50 million in stocking and fitting out the branch to Tuskys brand standards.
The local business community, led by Mzee Sultan Khimji, welcomed the entry of Tuskys, describing it as a shot in the arm of the Malindi economy.
"As a member of the Malindi business community, we wholeheartedly welcome Tuskys to this market and celebrate the resilience of local retailers who continue to inspire our confidence," Khimji said.
