On Friday, Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja were released on bail in a Nairobi court.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, Mrs. Karanja pleaded not guilty on behalf of Keroche Breweries, while her husband was granted bail due to his health condition.
The court set bail terms of Ksh. 10 million for Mrs. Karanja, to be paid immediately, and Ksh. 2 million for Mr. Karanja, to be paid within seven days.
The company, Keroche Breweries, was ordered to pay Ksh. 10 million cash bail within seven days, or face the arrest of all its directors.
Prosecutor Alexander Muteti had initially asked the court to consider the Ksh. 14 billion under investigation, stating that the accused persons had been summoned to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices and had made an appearance.
However, Senior Counsel James Orengo, representing Keroche, argued that the Ksh. 14 billion was in dispute and that there was a statutory process for settling any tax dispute.
The case will be mentioned on September 2 and the pre-trial hearing on September 24.
