This archive report was first published on 23 August 2019.

Kenya is on the cusp of its sixth national census, a crucial exercise that will provide valuable insights into the country's population, living conditions, and access to basic services. The census, which kicks off on the night of August 24, 2019, and extends up to August 31, 2019, aims to cover more than 12 million households.

Conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the census will seek to gather reliable and detailed data on the size and distribution of the population in the country. This information will be instrumental in planning, resource allocation, and policy formulation for development.

Enumerators will be seeking information on various aspects of household life, including age, sex, physical location, education, labor force, ICT, and household assets. The questionnaire will cover a range of topics, including:

  • Residential information, including county, sub-county, division, location, sub-location, and ward
  • Education, with a focus on the highest level of education attained by each household member, aged three years and older
  • Fertility, with females aged 12 and above required to state the number of infants they have given birth to and those that may have died
  • Intersex persons will be counted for the first time, with respondents required to state whether they are male, female, or intersex
  • Household assets, including type of house, roofing material, and ownership status
  • Economic activities, including occupation, industry, hours worked, and online transactions
  • Access to ICT, including mobile phones, computers, and the internet
  • Household assets, including properties such as bicycles, motorcycles, cars, and boats
  • Agri-business, including crop farming, livestock rearing, and aquaculture
  • Water and energy sources, including cooking fuels
