On August 19, 2019, Caroline Murugi was arrested and charged with stealing a chicken worth Sh700 from her neighbour, Mercy Gakii, in Embu North sub-county.

Murugi claimed that the chicken had followed her to her homestead, saying 'since the chicken went to her homestead on its own', she should not be blamed.

Embu senior resident magistrate Tony Kwambai, however, was not convinced by Murugi's defence and fined her Sh2,500 and sentenced her to two months in jail.

According to the prosecution, Murugi was found carrying a bag containing the chicken carcass, which she claimed contained clothes.
