On August 23, 2019, Keroche Breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja appeared before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, facing 10 counts of tax evasion related to Sh14.45 billion.
The couple pleaded not guilty to the charges, which claimed that their firm failed to remit the taxman.
Magistrate Andayi released the couple on bail, with the terms varying to take into consideration Mr Karanja's health.
Mr Karanja, the Chairman of Keroche Breweries, was ordered to pay Sh2 million within seven days, while his wife, the CEO, was required to pay Sh10 million immediately.
The company, Keroche Breweries, was ordered to pay Sh15 million cash bail within seven days, failure to which all the directors would be re-arrested.
The couple was also ordered to deposit their passports with the court.
According to reports, Mrs Karanja spent the night in police custody, while her husband was released upon request by his doctor, who stated that his health was not in good shape.
