Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro announced the arrest of three additional suspects in connection with an alleged coup attempt, increasing the total detained to 34, according to a government statement.
The operation, which Maduro compared to the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, involved armed men landing near Caracas in early May. The president emphasized ongoing efforts to apprehend all individuals involved in the plot.
Among those detained are two former U.S. soldiers, Luke Denman and Airan Berry, who face charges including terrorism, conspiracy, and illicit weapons trafficking. They could receive 25 to 30 years in prison if convicted. Venezuelan nationals are also implicated in the case.
Maduro accused U.S. President Donald Trump of orchestrating the operation with opposition leader Juan Guaido, who is recognized as interim president by the U.S. and other nations. However, Trump has denied the allegations, and Guaido has not been formally charged.
