On August 21, 2019, the Kirinyaga County Assembly was adjourned for two weeks, marking a significant development in the ongoing leadership crisis that has plagued the institution.
The adjournment, which was moved by Majority Leader Kamau Murango, was met with mixed reactions from the ward representatives, with some voting in favour of the motion while others walked out in protest.
According to Mr Murango, the adjournment was necessary due to the prevailing circumstances in the Assembly, which had rendered House business ineffective.
"Aware of the prevailing circumstances in the Assembly, I do now move a motion to adjourn the Assembly and committee sittings until September 4," he said.
The move comes just two days after the Kerugoya High Court reinstated all the 12 elected MCAs who had been voted out as chairmen of key committees.
However, a group of ward representatives dismissed the adjournment as illegal, arguing that it was against the House standing orders and had a hidden agenda.
"All the operations of the House are paralysed and this is against the House standing orders. Mr Murango's motion has a hidden agenda," said Wamumu Ward representative Baptista Kanga.
