Keroche Breweries owner Joseph Karanja, 71, was arrested on August 22, 2019, alongside his wife and business partner Tabitha Karanja, over KSh 14.4 billion tax evasion allegations.

However, Karen Hospital has advised against detaining Karanja, citing a serious medical condition.

The hospital's cardiologist, D Gikonyo, noted that Karanja had recently undergone life-saving surgery and requires regular medication.

According to a letter from the hospital, detention could endanger Karanja's life.

"This is to certify that Karanja is under our medical care. He has a serious medical condition that requires regular medications," the letter read in part.

"He has recently undergone life-saving surgery. Keeping him under police custody will greatly endanger his life," the letter further stated.

Karanja and his wife are being held at Muthaiga Police Station and will be arraigned on Friday, August 23, 2019.
